Business Intelligence Analytics policy

This policy describes the requirements for entities planning digital investments and adopting business intelligence analytics.

Applicability

Digital investment proposals are assessed against this policy by the DTA through the Digital and ICT Investment Oversight Framework (IOF).

Commonwealth entities are encouraged to apply this policy to all digital investments.

Policy requirements

  • Comply with legislation

    Comply with any legislation relevant to your circumstances.

  • Ensure privacy and security whenever business intelligence analytics are used

    Implement robust security measures, including encryption, access controls, regular audits. Ensure the use of information assets adheres to access conditions inherited from data sources to safeguard data from unauthorised access and breaches.

  • Establish and enforce data governance and quality standards

    Establish and enforce data governance and quality standards to enable appropriate, valid, and meaningful reuse of data, delivering authoritative insights.

  • Prioritise safe integration with data sources

    Establish and utilise standards and protocols for safe integration with data sources to ensure minimal operational impact on source systems. 

  • Ensure the ethical use of data

    Develop guidelines to identify and mitigate biases in data collection, analysis and interpretation will support ethical outcomes.  Ensure transparency in data use and analytics processes by providing clear documentation and justification for analytical methods and decisions.

  • Monitor innovation and emerging trends in business data analytics

    Monitor emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine assisted decision making and big data analytics to adapt rapidly to opportunities and risks.

  • Prioritise sustainability and scalability

    Develop long-term strategies for the sustainability and scalability of business intelligence analytics solutions to accommodate future growth and technological advancements.

  • Develop data and analytics capabilities of staff

    Implement comprehensive training and development programs to enhance the data and analytics capabilities of staff. This includes foundational training in data management, analytics techniques, and the use of business intelligence tools and platforms.

  • Adhere to reuse principles

    Adopt reuseable digital and ICT solutions, patterns, or knowledge. Where necessary, design new solutions with a focus on future reuse.
