Purpose

Business intelligence analytics enables strategic understanding and better-informed decision making.

Business intelligence analytics is realised through:

  • the bringing together of datasets from various sources
  • utilisation of analytics functionality embedded within existing platforms, and integration of specialised data and analytics tools with other platforms and applications
  • enabling users to visualise information, gain insights, and make informed decisions quickly to improve business outcomes.

Objectives

The objectives of this content are to:

  • ensure business intelligence analytics solutions across government are implemented to a secure standard relevant to their risk of security compromise
  • ensure entities are familiar with business intelligence analytics best practices, to enable informed decisions on investment in business intelligence analytics solutions
  • ensure new solutions leverage past investments, implementations, and learnings to enhance security, efficiency and encourage re-use while minimising risk
  • ensure strategic alignment of business intelligence analytics features to the Australian Government’s cyber security goals
  • meet the minimum compliance with contractual obligations, legislation and regulation, government policies and standards, and any national or international agreements relating to business intelligence analytics
  • considering the capability as complementary to other related capabilities, including Information Management, Advanced Data Analytics and Operational Analytics.

Whole-of-government applicability

The Data and Digital Government Strategy (DDGS) sets a vision for 2030 to deliver simple, secure and connected public services for all people and business, through world class data and digital capabilities.

Business intelligence analytics is identified as a key capability for the DDGS mission of “Delivering for all people and business”. Under this mission, the outcome to “maximise value from data” guides the APS to:

  • deliver work which optimises the use of data through integration and analytics and improves decision making
  • collect and analyse data to assess whether solutions, services, and policies are achieving their intended purpose are being implemented in the best possible way
  • harness analytical tools and techniques to predict service needs, improve user experience, support evidence-based decisions and gain efficiencies in agency operations.
