Metadata and Semantics policy (position)

This policy aims to manage and utilise metadata and semantics to make Government owned data more accessible, understandable and valuable to the Australian public. To provide input, please contact architecture@dta.gov.au

Applicability

Digital investment proposals are assessed against this policy by the DTA through the Digital and ICT Investment Oversight Framework (IOF).

Commonwealth entities are encouraged to apply this policy to all digital investments.

This Metadata and Semantics policy position represents the DTA’s opinion of best practice and will be further refined upon feedback provided.

Policy (position)

  • Collaborate with the private and research sectors for mutual understanding of how data should be best described, interpreted and managed.

  • Optimise the use and reuse of public data.

  • Release non-sensitive data as open by default, using standardised descriptions for metadata shared across agencies.

  • Ensure data is meaningful, well described, and contextualised.
